SUMMARY:Gippsland Pubs
DESCRIPTION:For every day of History Month\, someone in the 50\,000 members of Gippsland History on Facebook will be chasing down and recording one of the Places that Made Us – Gippsland Pubs. From mountain shanties to glorious three-story hotels\, we will be attempting to find and name them all. On the way\, we will prove that pubs were our first public places\, and Gippsland definitely had more pubs than post offices.

SUMMARY:Rehearsing the City: Photography exhibition
DESCRIPTION:On display are photographs sourced from the collections of Victoria’s State and National Archives\, as well as work by contemporary photographers responding to Victoria’s urban environment: Ai Tam Do\, Adrian Leung\, Suzanne Phoenix\, Ted Richards\, Sande Harsa\, Mark Forbes\, Melanie Cobham\, Michael Currie\, Andrew Tan\, Hashem McAdam\, Chris Bekos and Deb Stembridge. \nBoth the archival and contemporary images examine how public space is not just shaped by architects and urban planners\, but also by protest\, improvisation and the rhythms of daily life. Communities and individuals constantly use the built environment in creative or unexpected ways\, reinterpreting or subverting its intended design. These acts of resistance show that urban environments are not static – they grow and adapt with their inhabitants. Design can guide\, but it is the everyday actions of people that give public space its meaning and its future. \nThe exhibition is open throughout October\, 10 am–4:30 pm weekdays\, and 10 am–4 pm every second and last Saturday of the month.

SUMMARY:Gembrook Nurseries – Photography Display
DESCRIPTION:The Places That Made Us – Nobelius Heritage Park \nThe Nobelius Heritage Park is a 4.5 hectare area of unique historic and horticultural significance. From 1901\, the site was the centre of the world-famous Gembrook Nurseries (also known as the Nobelius Nursery)\, started by Carl Axel Nobelius in 1886. \nAt more than  650 hectares\, the nursery was the largest in the southern hemisphere. Before World War I\, the nursery exported hundreds of thousands of fruit and ornamental trees each year to five continents. \nGembrook Nurseries became the single most important influence in Emerald’s early and economic and social development. At the nursery’s peak\, Nobelius employed more than 80 people to grow and harvest the trees. Most nursery work took place in winter\, enabling settlers to establish their own properties which they worked on in the summer. \nAs the small township grew up around the nursery\, Nobelius supported local sports teams and social activities. He provided a loan to build the first Mechanics Institute in Emerald and donated prizes to the local school. \nNobelius was also one of thirteen local witnesses who gave evidence to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railways in 1898\, proposing the construction of a railway to connect Ferntree Gully with Gembrook. The petition was successful and led to what is now known as the Puffing Billy Railway being officially opened in 1900. \nToday the Nobelius Heritage Park and Emerald Museum tell the story of Carl Axel Nobelius and the Gembrook Nurseries\, recognising their significant contribution to the early growth and development of Emerald.

SUMMARY:Balwyn Heritage Walk
DESCRIPTION:Reimagine Balwyn of the past\nJoin us for an Senior and History Month event! \nExplore a guided walk through Balwyn’s fascinating past\, starting at the Balwyn Baptist Church and winding our way to the Palace Cinema. Along the way\, you’ll trace the suburb’s journey from open paddocks and grazing land to one of Melbourne’s most sought-after neighbourhoods. \nHear how trams changed everything in 1916\, how a simple land tax in 1921 spurred rapid development\, and how a humble vet who once tended horses and cows adapted to care for beloved pets. We’ll stop at every street to uncover stories that shaped this community — from bonfire nights in Beckett Park to the thrill of billy cart races flying down Balwyn Road. \nIt’s more than a walk — it’s a stroll through living history. \nCome curious. Leave inspired. \nTour starts at Balwyn Baptist Church – corner of Parring and Whitehorse Roads. \nPlease remember to wear sensible shoes\, weather appropriate clothing and to take care throughout the walk as there are uneven surfaces. \nFor bookings\, visit https://www.pmi.net.au/ – just follow the ‘News and Events’ link in the top menu.

SUMMARY:Open House Latrobe Tours at Old Gippstown Heritage Park
DESCRIPTION:Three homes. Three very different chapters in Gippsland’s history. \nOpen House Latrobe is coming to Latrobe City\, and Old Gippstown is opening the doors to three remarkable buildings for a series of guided\, behind-the-scenes tours. \nFollow our heritage guide through Bushy Park Homestead and discover what life was like for squatters establishing themselves in Gippsland during the 1840s. \nExplore “Loren”\, a rare prefabricated iron house created in response to the housing shortage of the gold rush era. Manufactured in England\, these houses were flat-packed and shipped to Melbourne. Originally located in North Melbourne\, Loren was later given to Old Gippstown by the National Trust. \nThe tour concludes at Yallourn House\, built by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria as part of the model township created to house its workforce. The house was eventually removed as the town made way for the coal beneath it\, leaving a distinctive example of mid-century life in the Latrobe Valley. \nTours take place at 10am\, 11am and 12pm and are 45 minutes duration. Places on these special tours can only be booked through the Open House Latrobe website https://events.humanitix.com/old-gippstown-guided-tours for a $7 booking fee. There is no fee for general admission on this weekend for the Open House Latrobe event. \nGeneral entry to Old Gippstown will be free\, giving visitors the opportunity to explore the many other historic buildings throughout our collection. \nBook your tour through Open House Latrobe and discover how the homes of Gippsland changed across more than a century.

SUMMARY:Grave Insanity - Ararat Cemetery Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Grave Insanity – A Cemetery Walking Tour\nBetween Life and Death Lies History \nThe Grave Insanity Cemetery Tour gives the public guided access to rarely discussed burial stories connected to Ararat’s former asylum era — including newly uncovered names and archival details that have never before been shared in a public tour. \nLed by archives explorer and author Jacqui Sanders\, whose research has brought national attention to the hidden histories of institutionalised mothers and children\, this powerful immersive tour moves beyond ghost stories to reveal the real lives behind the headstones. \nWith access to original records and deeply personal case studies drawn from years of research\, Grave Insanity offers audiences something extraordinary: the chance to stand at the graves of those once labelled “insane” and hear the human stories history tried to forget.
