SUMMARY:Pink and Green Bans: Sam Wallman Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:In the 1970s\, Australian construction workers took the extraordinary step of laying down their tools to defend historic buildings\, low-income housing\, the natural environment\, and persecuted queer communities. These acts of solidarity became known as the Green Bans and the Pink Bans\, a remarkable chapter of working-class history that shaped the country’s cities and its conscience. \nSupported by a City of Melbourne Arts Grant\, artist Sam Wallman has spent several years immersed in this story\, working on the upcoming book All Out: Pink Bans and Blue Collars which will be published next year by National Library of Australia Publishing. \nThis exhibition presents new comic panels and paintings drawn from that research. Open throughout October\, 10 am – 4:30 pm weekdays\, and 10 am – 4 pm every second and last Saturday of the month.

SUMMARY:Rehearsing the City: Photography exhibition
DESCRIPTION:On display are photographs sourced from the collections of Victoria’s State and National Archives\, as well as work by contemporary photographers responding to Victoria’s urban environment: Ai Tam Do\, Adrian Leung\, Suzanne Phoenix\, Ted Richards\, Sande Harsa\, Mark Forbes\, Melanie Cobham\, Michael Currie\, Andrew Tan\, Hashem McAdam\, Chris Bekos and Deb Stembridge. \nBoth the archival and contemporary images examine how public space is not just shaped by architects and urban planners\, but also by protest\, improvisation and the rhythms of daily life. Communities and individuals constantly use the built environment in creative or unexpected ways\, reinterpreting or subverting its intended design. These acts of resistance show that urban environments are not static – they grow and adapt with their inhabitants. Design can guide\, but it is the everyday actions of people that give public space its meaning and its future. \nThe exhibition is open throughout October\, 10 am–4:30 pm weekdays\, and 10 am–4 pm every second and last Saturday of the month.

SUMMARY:Enid Gilchrist: She taught Australia to sew
DESCRIPTION:Enid’s was a household name. From the 1930s to the 1970s\, her sewing patterns and advice appeared weekly in The Argus and New Idea\, while her 66 pattern collection magazines sold throughout Australia and overseas\, reaching millions of readers. \nA pioneering designer and businesswoman\, Enid encouraged generations of women to make practical\, fashionable and durable clothing. Long before today’s conversations about sustainable fashion and the circular economy\, she promoted adapting existing materials and making clothes to last. \nThe exhibition will feature original patterns and publications\, clothing\, photographs and other material relating to Enid’s life and work. Visitors will also be invited to share their own memories of Enid\, sewing and home dressmaking.
