SUMMARY:Grave Insanity - Ararat Cemetery Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Grave Insanity – A Cemetery Walking Tour\nBetween Life and Death Lies History \nThe Grave Insanity Cemetery Tour gives the public guided access to rarely discussed burial stories connected to Ararat’s former asylum era — including newly uncovered names and archival details that have never before been shared in a public tour. \nLed by archives explorer and author Jacqui Sanders\, whose research has brought national attention to the hidden histories of institutionalised mothers and children\, this powerful immersive tour moves beyond ghost stories to reveal the real lives behind the headstones. \nWith access to original records and deeply personal case studies drawn from years of research\, Grave Insanity offers audiences something extraordinary: the chance to stand at the graves of those once labelled “insane” and hear the human stories history tried to forget.

SUMMARY:Exploring the foundations of rural Victorian townships
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday and Sunday 3-4 October\, for \nExploring the foundations of rural Victorian townships:\na focus on Kilmore and Lancefield\nBrought to you the Historical Society Support Committee and co-hosted by Romsey & Lancefield Districts Historical Society and Kilmore Historical Society. \nWhen early settlers arrived in a rural or regional district\, the first institutions they established were churches\, schools\, hospitals\, banks and post offices. Sporting clubs – especially football and tennis clubs – were often at the heart of these growing townships. Railway lines transporting people and produce to Melbourne or to the border\, were welcomed. Kilmore\, the first inland town\, was established in 1841. Lancefield was settled in the 1850s. Both thrived during the Gold Rush era. These towns\, like others across Victoria\, followed a similar pattern of development. \nThe seminar will feature walking tours and talks on the development of Kilmore and Lancefield’s foundational institutions. Participants will discover that the nineteenth century patterns of development remain visible in these picturesque and historic towns located in the beautiful Macedon Ranges and Mitchell Shires. \nFor more information or to book\, visit https://www.historyvictoria.org.au/event/exploring-the-foundations/

SUMMARY:Balwyn Heritage Walk
DESCRIPTION:Reimagine Balwyn of the past\nJoin us for an Senior and History Month event! \nExplore a guided walk through Balwyn’s fascinating past\, starting at the Balwyn Baptist Church and winding our way to the Palace Cinema. Along the way\, you’ll trace the suburb’s journey from open paddocks and grazing land to one of Melbourne’s most sought-after neighbourhoods. \nHear how trams changed everything in 1916\, how a simple land tax in 1921 spurred rapid development\, and how a humble vet who once tended horses and cows adapted to care for beloved pets.

SUMMARY:The Thin Blue Line – Police at the Brighton Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:The Victoria Police was formally established on 8 January 1853 from an existing  colonial police force of 875 men. Of the large numbers of Irish who joined  the Police Force many were Laborers\, Miners\, Farm workers and even pardoned Convicts. These early policemen worked very hard\, especially in country Victoria. They covered wide areas\, their wives and children would have to move constantly when  their husbands were transferred and often these wives were single parents for long periods of time. Today we will hear just a few stories of those buried within the walls of Brighton General Cemetery. Stories about the Policeman who was found guilty of misconduct by lying about his blossoming weight and the Policeman who rescued many people in the 1890 floods and was recognised with the Valor Award. So come and join us as we look behind the thin blue line and see the private lives of those sworn to serve and protect us.
