SUMMARY:Whispers of History
DESCRIPTION:Women of the past were so often left unheard. Women who stood beside their husbands\, fathers\, brothers\, and sons — day after day\, season after season — shaping the very foundations we stand on today. Whittlesea’s origin story is told through the eyes of the women who lived it. Their labour\, their resilience\, their humour\, their grief\, their grit. Their stories are not footnotes to the district’s history; they are the history. \nJoin us for History Month at Whittlesea Library and meet local historians and authors Gwen Hawke and Maureen Doyle who will discuss their book Whispers of History: Pioneering Women of Whittlesea prior to 1945.

SUMMARY:The Mallee's Living Histories Forum
DESCRIPTION:A story worth telling: Mallee project shares its success\nA country Victorian project that has captured more than 120 life stories from older people is now hoping to inspire other communities to preserve their own living histories.\nEvery family and every community has older people whose stories help explain who we are and where we have come from. But unless someone takes the time to sit down\, ask the questions and listen\, the memories can all too easily be lost. \nThe Mallee’s Living Histories project is bringing together storytellers\, writers and experts for a special forum in Mildura\, sharing what has been learned during the project’s eight-year journey. It will also provide practical resources to help other communities establish similar projects of their own. \n“We don’t want people to leave simply thinking this is a lovely project\,” Mallee’s Living Histories instigator Vernon Knight AM said. \n“We want them to leave thinking\, ‘We could do this in our community too’. \n“There are wonderful stories sitting in every community\, just waiting for someone to take the time to ask and listen. We hope this forum gives people the confidence and the practical tools to go home and start capturing them.” \nTo be held at SuniTAFE on Saturday October 3 2026 the CONVERSATION\, CONNECTION\, COMMUNITY forum will explore the power of storytelling to connect people\, strengthen communities and ensure the experiences and wisdom of older generations are not lost. The forum is open to the general public and registrations are now being taken. \nThe forum has grown from increasing interest in The Mallee’s Living Histories from people outside the region wanting to learn how they could establish similar projects in their own communities. \nThe forum will be live-streamed at no cost. Registrations are now open. \n“We are currently preparing Book 8 of The Mallee’s Living Histories for publication and launch in December\, with another 21 stories. That takes the number we have published over the past eight years to more than 120\,” Mr Knight said. \n“The interest from other communities planted the seed for this forum – not only to celebrate what has been built here in the Mallee\, but to share what we have learned and encourage others to begin capturing the stories within their own communities.” \nThe Mallee’s Living Histories began in 2018\, inspired by Mr Knight’s experience helping an elderly Mildura woman record and publish her memoir. \nAgainst the backdrop of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety\, the project developed from a simple but powerful idea: that taking the time to ask older people about their lives\, experiences and memories could help address isolation and loneliness while affirming the value of their knowledge and contribution. \nMr Knight said while the published stories created an important legacy for families and the wider community\, the conversations between writers and storytellers were at the heart of the project. \n“The books provide a lasting record for children\, grandchildren and future generations\, but just as importantly\, the process gives older people an opportunity to reflect on their lives and know that their experiences matter.” \nThe forum will feature three guest speakers. Peter Kenyon\, Director of the Bank of I.D.E.A.S will speak on the importance of building caring and connected communities. Peter will be followed by Dr Sean MacDermott\, Director of the John Richards Centre for Rural Ageing Research. Sean’s presentation will focus on the critical role of storytelling in ageing well. The final guest speaker will be children’s author Phil Kettle. Phil will be sharing his views on the art of writing and the joy of reading. \nTheir presentations will be followed by two panel discussions. \nThe first will explore how stories connect people and add meaning to their lives\, while the second will take participants behind the scenes of The Mallee’s Living Histories project\, with writers and a storyteller sharing their experiences and lessons learned over the past eight years. \nImportantly\, the project team will also make its resources available\, at no cost\, to participants and invite those interested in starting a Living Histories project to join a future online session where they can ask practical questions about getting started. \nThere will be ample opportunity over the luncheon break\, and at the end of the day\, for participants to meet with the project team and guest speakers to discuss the Mallee’s Living Histories project. \nThe forum has been made possible through a Quick Response Grant from Mildura Rural City Council and the support of SuniTAFE. \nGeneral registrations to attend in person are $25. Livestream registrations are available now at no cost. Participants attending in person will receive a gift bag and light lunch. Tickets can be booked at https://www.malleelivinghistories.com.au/ \nCopies of the latest edition of The Mallee’s Living Histories will also be available for purchase on the day. \nEVENT DETAILS\nWhat: The Mallee’s Living Histories Forum\nWhen: Saturday October 3 2026\nWhere: SuniTAFE\, Mildura\nGeneral registration: $25\nLivestream: Free\nBookings: https://www.malleelivinghistories.com.au/

SUMMARY:Exploring the foundations of rural Victorian townships
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday and Sunday 3-4 October\, for \nExploring the foundations of rural Victorian townships:\na focus on Kilmore and Lancefield\nBrought to you the Historical Society Support Committee and co-hosted by Romsey & Lancefield Districts Historical Society and Kilmore Historical Society. \nWhen early settlers arrived in a rural or regional district\, the first institutions they established were churches\, schools\, hospitals\, banks and post offices. Sporting clubs – especially football and tennis clubs – were often at the heart of these growing townships. Railway lines transporting people and produce to Melbourne or to the border\, were welcomed. Kilmore\, the first inland town\, was established in 1841. Lancefield was settled in the 1850s. Both thrived during the Gold Rush era. These towns\, like others across Victoria\, followed a similar pattern of development. \nThe seminar will feature walking tours and talks on the development of Kilmore and Lancefield’s foundational institutions. Participants will discover that the nineteenth century patterns of development remain visible in these picturesque and historic towns located in the beautiful Macedon Ranges and Mitchell Shires. \nFor more information or to book\, visit https://www.historyvictoria.org.au/event/exploring-the-foundations/

SUMMARY:Curator's Talk - Dancing Through the Decades
DESCRIPTION:Dancing Through the Decades is a vibrant exploration of dance as a powerful form of cultural expression across the City of Hume\, spanning from early settlement to the present day. The exhibition reveals how dance has shaped identity\, storytelling\, and community connection\, highlighting its enduring place in social life. \nBeginning with early local settlements in Broadmeadows\, Sunbury and surrounding districts\, the exhibition explores how community dances\, held in halls\, schools and local venues\, brought people together through traditions such as the waltz\, foxtrot and swing. Archival photographs\, programs and objects bring these shared moments of celebration and connection to life. \nThe exhibition then moves into the later twentieth century\, tracing the rise of youth culture and the influence of popular dance styles including rock ’n’ roll\, disco and contemporary social trends. Through personal stories and visual material\, it reflects broader social changes\, including shifts in music\, fashion and media\, alongside the growth and diversity of Hume’s communities. \nDrawing on objects\, images and research\, Meryl invites audiences to consider their own experiences of dance and its role in shaping identity\, belonging and community life. \nTogether\, the exhibition and talk provide an engaging and reflective journey through the rhythms of social history. \nA light lunch is included in the ticket price. \nTickets: https://events.humanitix.com/curator-s-talk-dancing-through-the-decades?dateId=6a209e0fbae4be45eb71e2f2

SUMMARY:Book Launch - The Tucker Truck come on Tuesdays
DESCRIPTION:Erica and District Historical Society are excited to be hosting the book launch of historian Mike McCarthy’s latest book\, ‘The Tucker Truck came on Tuesdays’ about the timber industry in Erica\, its sawmills\, tramways and people. \nWhen the Moe – Walhalla narrow-gauge railway was opened in 1910 it provided an outlet for a vast quantity of timber in the rugged mountain ranges surrounding the Thomson and Tyers River valleys. This book describes the vast network of tramways which fed the Walhalla railway at O’Shea and Bennett Siding\, Knotts Siding\, Erica\, Collins Siding\, Moondarra\, and Gould. Also described are the timber mills and the isolated settlements that surrounded them. \nThe text covers all aspects of the history – political\, economic\, technical\, and social. It is based on over 60 years of research\, including interviews\, historical documents and maps\, and extensive ground research. \nThe book includes superb coloured maps and diagrams\, and detailed histories of the steam and internal-combustion locomotives that were used on the tramways. It is illustrated by a generous collection of historic photographs. \nThe book will be launched by Gary Blackwood\, former MLA for Narracan and long time timber industry stalwart. \nAfternoon tea will be provided for attendees. The book is available for a special price at the launch\, and all are welcome to attend. \n

SUMMARY:Doctors in the Gippsland Region- Informative Talk
DESCRIPTION:Sale Family History Group Talk- Doctors in Sale Region\nSale or Flooding Creek\, as was known in the early days\, had many good doctors over the years and the stories of five of them will be detailed in the talk by Heather Pocknall of the Sale Family History Group. \nEarly Doctor’s Arbuckle\, Ewing\, Rennie\, Hedley and Lightfoot will be the subjects and the description of their search for adventure and advantage\, while trying to conduct medical practices in Flooding Creek and surrounds. \nEarly medical treatments appear somewhat bizarre to our community today as there was no anesthesia\, appendicitis was always fatal\, no caesarean births\, no x-rays or blood examinations and no insulin for diabetics. \nAbout 50% of patients didn’t survive surgery\, there were no vaccines and the prognosis for diseases like Smallpox\, Tuberculosis\, Whooping Cough\, Typhoid\, Tetanus\, Diphtheria and Poliomyelitis was poor with no treatment available. How things have progressed for the better in subsequent years. \nThursday 15th October Bar Open – $10 Cover charge – RSVP encouraged

SUMMARY:Beyond the Cities of the Plain: Settler Sexuality and Gender on Victoria’s Goldfields
DESCRIPTION:Is ‘queer’ history urban history? The urban/rural divide has long characterised histories of sexuality and gender: defining cities as spaces of a vibrant queer subculture\, and the rural or regional as empty sites to be escaped. The expansion of pastoral and mining interests in nineteenth-century Victoria\, however\, made non-urban instances of sexual and gender transgression routinely visible. At times controversial\, sometimes exceptional\, often they were simply unremarkable. \nIn this year’s Weston Bate Lecture\, Jacobin Bosman presents a reimagining of how settler society understood\, experienced\, and expressed sexuality and gender through a case study of the Victorian goldfields (1851-1879). Focusing on moments in which the purportedly ‘unspeakable’ or ‘unknown’ were rendered publicly visible by courtrooms and newspapers\, this lecture discusses the multiple meanings made of same-sex desire and cross-gender expression involving settlers in rural\, regional and remote parts of the colony. In doing so\, it presents a new image of this time and area. One in which ‘the queer’ was as often a fundamental part of everyday experience\, as it was a threat to colonial advancement. \nDoors open 5.30pm | Lecture starts 6pm | Finish time 7.15pm \nBookings at https://www.sovereignhill.com.au/events/weston-bate-memorial-lecture/
