SUMMARY:Close Encounters: Intimacies and Asian Australian Cinema
DESCRIPTION:The RMIT Australian Screen Research Collection Salon celebrates milestones in Asian Australian filmmaking through an exclusive in-conversation event with pioneers of the topic: Professor Olivia Khoo and director/producer Tony Ayres. \nModerated by this year’s research fellow Dr Scarlette Nhi Do\, the guests will discuss stories we tell about Asian migration to Australia and the accompanying racial fissures of a multicultural society. The interview will follow Scarlette’s summary of her research findings for the project tracing depictions of relationships between Asian and Indigenous people in cinema. \nThe evening will conclude with a special screening of Ayres’ 1999 documentary\, Sadness: A Monologue by William Yang. This adaptation of Yang’s acclaimed stage performance intertwines the photographer’s journey to understand his Chinese heritage and his experiences during the HIV/AIDS epidemic. \nEvent Website: https://www.rmit.edu.au/library/events/2026/oct/close-encounters

SUMMARY:Holding the Line: Thermopylae\, Brallos Pass\, and the Making of Memory
DESCRIPTION:In April 1941\, Australian and New Zealand troops fought a series of desperate delaying actions during the Allied withdrawal through Greece. At Thermopylae and nearby Brallos Pass\, they defended ground already indelibly associated with one of the most famous last stands of the ancient world. \nBut what happens to a battle after the fighting ends? Who remembers it\, how is its story passed on\, and why do some places and events acquire meanings that endure across generations? \nJoin us at the Shrine for a special afternoon exploring the history and legacy of the 1941 Greek campaign through the intertwined themes of battle\, memory and commemoration. \nChaired by Spartans & ANZACs curator Neil Sharkey\, the conversation brings together Associate Professor Bart Ziino\, historian of Australians at war and the ways war has been remembered; Associate Professor Sarah Midford\, whose research explores classical antiquity\, Australian war commemoration and national identity; and representatives of the 2/2nd Field Regiment Association\, whose work has helped recover and preserve the story of the Regiment and its service in Greece. \nTogether\, they will explore the fighting at Thermopylae and Brallos Pass\, the powerful legacy of the ancient Spartan story\, and the ways veterans\, descendants\, historians and communities have carried the memory of these events forward. \nThe program includes the Spartans & ANZACs exhibition audiovisual presentation\, audience Q&A and refreshments\, followed by a curator-led visit to the exhibition with Neil Sharkey. \nFor tickets and more information\, visit https://www.shrine.org.au/holding-line

SUMMARY:Author talk: Ross McMullin on 'The Light on the Hill'
DESCRIPTION:The Light on the Hill is Ross McMullin’s acclaimed commissioned history of the ALP.  Hailed as a “classic”\, it covers all states and the federal scene comprehensively and accurately while maximising liveliness and readability. The research is prodigious\, the narrative is action-packed\, and the scope and span of the coverage is sweeping. The “warts-and-all” story is told through the people who made it\, and is full of illuminating pen-portraits and anecdotes.  \nThe vivid story-telling blends the achievements and tribulations of Labor’s governments with conflicts over organisation and policy\, emotional highs and lows\, and intrigue and intimidation behind the scenes. Prodigiously researched\, captivating and powerful\, The Light on the Hill — now right up to date including the 2025 election and beyond — is the most authoritative and monumental account of Labor’s rich history. \nRoss is an accomplished and entertaining speaker\, and his talk will feature some of the best stories in The Light on the Hill. \nRoss is an award-winning historian\, biographer and storyteller. His biography Pompey Elliott won multiple awards\, and his lost generation multi-biographies were also acclaimed — Farewell Dear People won awards including the Prime Minister’s Prize for Australian History\, and Life So Full of Promise won The Age Book of the Year Award. \nTickets at https://ballaratmi.org.au/event/twilight-talks-season-2-the-light-on-the-hill-an-updated-history-of-the-australian-labor-party/
