SUMMARY:Designs of Deception: Camouflage\, Culture and Innovation
DESCRIPTION:Camouflage isn’t just for the battlefield. It’s a design language that adapts\, disrupts and blends across environments. \nJoin a dynamic panel chaired by ABC Radio National’s Big Ideas host Natasha Mitchell as we explore how camouflage has evolved from a tool of deception to a symbol of innovation\, identity and resistance. \nDiscover how cutting-edge developments in textile technology are driving both military and fashion industries to create garments that interact with their environments. Hear how researchers\, designers and creative practitioners alike use camouflage to challenge conventions\, inspire invention and subvert the boundaries of fashion. \nThis program is presented in collaboration with the RMIT University School of Fashion and Textiles and is part of the Melbourne Fashion Week program.

SUMMARY:Book launch: Resolute\, The Australian Air War in Burma
DESCRIPTION:Journey into a little-known chapter of Australia’s wartime history as the courage and sacrifice of Royal Australian Air Force aircrew in the Burma Campaign are brought to life for the first time. \nMore than 1\,700 RAAF airmen served in the Burma Campaign during the Second World War\, flying missions across some of the most challenging environments of the war. They undertook perilous sorties over ‘the Hump’ into China\, dropped agents into Burma\, Thailand\, Malaya\, and Indo-China\, battled Japanese bombers and fighters and conducted anti-submarine patrols\, long range reconnaissance\, bombing raids and ground attacks on targets throughout Southeast Asia. \nResolute\, the first detailed history of Australia’s air war in Burma\, brings these stories vividly to life. Drawing on years of research\, authors Dr Andrew Kilsby and Dr Daryl Moran—both sons of RAAF veterans—reveal the triumphs\, tragedies\, and human endurance of this forgotten campaign. \nJoin Andrew and Daryl in conversation with Peter Meehan OAM as they uncover this overlooked history. After the talk\, share in a light afternoon tea before gathering on the Shrine Forecourt for a moving Last Post Service(opens in a new window) marking 80 years since the first draft of RAAF men returned from Burma aboard the SS Sontay.

SUMMARY:Bonegilla-The migrant's journey
DESCRIPTION:“Bonegilla-The migrant’s journey” has been playing to sold out venues around Australia.\nThe performance is a multi media show that uses two screens on stage to play the filmed interviews of post war migrants from various European countries and also their photos\, home movies and documents. The musical soundtrack is played by a grand piano and string quartet live on stage and there is also immersive sound design. The stage is also decorated with migrant’s own possessions that they brought over on the ship\, or used during their early life here in Australia and a sea of LED candles set the emotional mood of the performance. \nYou’ll laugh. You’ll cry. But most of all you’ll be truly inspired by these gutsy pioneers who left everything behind and travelled to a country they knew nothing about.
