SUMMARY:Mulberry Hill open day - see where Picnic at Hanging Rock was written
DESCRIPTION:Join a guided tour of Mulberry Hill led by a National Trust guide\, where Picnic and Hanging Rock was written. \nMulberry Hill was the home of Sir Daryl and Lady Lindsay for over 50 years. Located 45 minutes from Melbourne\, the house sits in a bushland setting and was designed by renowned architect Harold Desbrowe Annear\, who renovated the house using salvaged and reclaimed building materials. \nThe building’s art collection includes the work of Australia’s foremost artists of the twentieth century and the home reflects the Lindsay’s contribution to Australian culture. \nJoan Lindsay is most remembered for writing the classic Australian novel Picnic at Hanging Rock. Her autobiographical book Time Without Clocks reveals the couple’s life together at Mulberry Hill and includes commentary about the arts and social history of the time. \nSir Daryl Lindsay was director of the National Gallery of Victoria from 1941 to 1956\, and was knighted in 1957 for his services to Australian art. A member of the famous Lindsay family of artists\, he was also an accomplished painter. Both Lindsays were involved in the founding of the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) in 1956\, with Daryl serving as the first president. \nTours will run hourly at 11:15 am\, 12:15 pm\, and 1:15 pm. \nPlease note that entry to the house is available only through a guided tour.

SUMMARY:Portable iron house open day
DESCRIPTION:See what life was like in Melbourne during the gold rush era \nSee what life was like in Melbourne during the gold rush era when you visit one of the few remaining prefabricated buildings in the world. The three houses in South Melbourne are among the last nineteenth-century prefabricated iron buildings. \nWith gold discovered in Victoria in 1851 accommodation was needed for the many migrants flocking to the colony. Tents and prefabricated iron houses met that need. During this time\, many new arrivals settled in Canvas Town—a large tent city that had sprung up between Port Melbourne and Princes Bridge in Melbourne. Residents paid five shillings per tent per week. Due to the housing crisis\, the hope of moving into even a small two- or six-roomed house was considered a luxury. \nOrdered from a catalogue\, the buildings offered ranged from modest cottages to theatres and even churches that could hold over 700 people. Constructed in Britain\, the houses were dismantled\, every component labelled then packed into crates and shipped abroad to be reassembled in their new location. Specialist labour was not required and anyone could assemble them by following the instructions. By 1855 South Melbourne comprised nearly 100 portable buildings\, of which Patterson House is on its original site. Abercrombie House and Bellhouse were relocated to the current sites from North Melbourne and Fitzroy. All three make up the Portable Iron Houses experience. \nThere are steps and uneven ground that must be navigated. \nThis is a National Trust property.

SUMMARY:The Heights open day - visit one of the largest surviving prefabricated houses in Victoria
DESCRIPTION:Visit one of the largest surviving prefabricated houses in Victoria\, situated in a flourishing garden setting. \nThe Heights was home to the Whytes\, a society couple who decorated their home in up-to-the minute 1930s style. The in-tact kitchen is a must see as are the floral garden beds when in bloom. \nIn 1854 a large\, prefabricated house imported from Germany was assembled for Charles Ibbotson – a well-known local businessman. Over the decades the house was modified and was extensively modernised in the 1930s by architect Harold Bartlett. The villa’s garden retains its nineteenth century gardenesque charm with a rose arbour\, formal bedding layout and carriage drive. The stables\, water tower\, groom’s cottage and dovecote are unique 19th outbuildings ready for you to explore. \nNote that there are steps and uneven ground that must be navigated. \nThis is a National Trust Victoria property.

SUMMARY:McCrae Homestead Open Day
DESCRIPTION:The McCrae Homestead\, once home to artist Georgiana McCrae\, offers an exceptional glimpse into domestic life in the 1840s. The homestead also houses the Burrell Gallery\, which chronicles the story of a family’s life on the Mornington Peninsula over 75 years. \nThe Homestead was built on Boonwurrung Country\, on a large lease within the Arthur’s Seat Run\, by the McCrae family one of the first six European families who occupied properties on the Mornington Peninsula. When Georgiana McCrae arrived at Arthur’s Seat in 1845\, together with a female servant and her smaller children\, the house had not been completed\, but the station did have a schoolhouse\, kitchen\, dairy and washhouse. It took a further 2 months for the homestead to be finished. \nThe plan for the house was drawn by Georgiana\, applying her skill as an artist to the design. She had been a professional portraitist in Edinburgh but gave up her career to marry Andrew McCrae\, who sought his professional fortune in the colonies. The couple arrived in Port Phillip in 1841. \nAfter the McCrae’s attempt at sheep farming failed\, they moved back to Melbourne and another family – the Burrells – purchased the land. They were a dedicated farming family\, who lived at the homestead from 1851 to 1926. \nDuring this time\, they made significant contributions to the broader Mornington Peninsula region. The Visitor’s Centre\, located on the property\, features galleries showcasing the McCraes’ art and memorabilia\, as well as photographs\, artifacts\, and personal items from the Burrell-Twycross family. The National Trust offers a Cross-Cultural Education Program at McCrae Homestead for school excursions. \nThere are steps and uneven ground that must be navigated.

SUMMARY:Captain Mills Cottage
DESCRIPTION:One of Victoria’s oldest homes\, Mills Cottage is a reminder of maritime history and life in Port Fairy\, a fishing village on the Shipwreck Coast. Port Fairy\, also known as Belfast\, was one of the busiest ports in colonial Victoria. \nNamed after the Mills family\, who occupied or owned the cottage from 1842 – 1909\, the house remains considerably intact including over fifty different wallpapers layered throughout its rooms. The earliest surviving part of Mills Cottage dates to 1843\, making it one of Victoria’s oldest homes. \nJohn and his brother Charles Fredrick Mills had been sealers and whalers\, but settled in Port Fairy\, where John became a maritime trader and Harbour Master and Charles a farmer. From the mid 1850s-1871 Captain John Mills was the Port Fairy Harbour Master\, an important role in such a bustling port. \nThere are steps and uneven ground that must be navigated. \nThis is a National Trust property.
