In the 1970s, Australian construction workers took the extraordinary step of laying down their tools to defend historic buildings, low-income housing, the natural environment, and persecuted queer communities. These acts of solidarity became known as the Green Bans and the Pink Bans, a remarkable chapter of working-class history that shaped the country’s cities and its conscience.
Supported by a City of Melbourne Arts Grant, artist Sam Wallman has spent several years immersed in this story, working on the upcoming book All Out: Pink Bans and Blue Collars which will be published next year by National Library of Australia Publishing.
This exhibition presents new comic panels and paintings drawn from that research. Open throughout October, 10 am – 4:30 pm weekdays, and 10 am – 4 pm every second and last Saturday of the month.
