Told in folk songs will be the story of Wangaratta. How abundant fertile land, lush grass and abundant water created ‘Port Phillip Fever’. Settlers arrived in wagon trains to squat on vast tracts of land, paying 10 pounds a year in rent. It was inevitable that Ovens Crossing would become a settlement and Wangaratta was born in the bush.
